I've never read Beowulf but have always meant to. I once worked with a very disadvantaged guy who surprised me by showing me a translation he was doing of the original text. He hadn't got that far, but that isn't the point. Its written in old (and very strange) english, and just not the sort of thing you just decide to translate.
